"Old Man" gang (average age of 48+ when N2SR is included & 52+
without him):

This year we were not sure what class we wanted to enter so we took a
straw poll of the 6 op's we had and settled on M/M. The station was
set up the weekend before the contest as usual, but this time it
consisted of 4 operating positions instead of our usual 3 (or even
2). The operators this time around included regulars W3UM (160M),
N3ED (80M), N3RS (40M), N3RD (20M) & N2SR (10M plus spot relief on all
bands) and W7CT (second op on 40M and spot relief on all bands).
Note that no one had a principal assignment on 15M, although N3ED, W3UM,
W7CT and N2SR all contributed to that band. We were hoping to make the
"box" this year and were very pleased with the results.
I think our entry on SSB will be M/2 since we will be down to 3.5
op's for that mode.
A few words about the station:
160M- The antenna is a top loaded 120 ft. high vertical with the
base about 12 ft above ground with 4 radials, also above ground. The
receiving antennas were 3 beverages; NE, W & S. The station used had
an IC-775DSP and Alpha 76PA.
80M- The antennas were a rotary EF-180C at 140 ft. and a 4V phases
array with the feed points at 65 ft. above ground and out 65 ft. from
the tower. The dipole was the main antenna for everything except JA
and VK/ZL. For those directions, the 4V played exceptionally well.
Same beverages were used on 80M as on 160M. The station was an
IC-765 and an Alpha 76PA.
40M- The antenna is an old HyGain 403B (original Long John) that
used to belong to N3EA (aka K3JH). It is a brute, but worth every
drop of sweat it took to get it in the air (thanks to the FRC antenna
crew). We had no precip static so, although we had access to those
beverages, we never used them. The equipment here was the second
IC-775DSP and another Alpha 76PA.
20M- The three stack of 5 element HB yagis at 117/77/37 ft. played
very well! Dave had personal high QSO rates this year at 175/hr the
first morning. The three antennas are all independently rotatable on
TIC rings. The equipment consisted of a TS-950SDX and a Titan
linear.
15M- A big disappointment here, but not unexpected with the way we
decided to man 15M. The antenna here is also a three stack, but
using long boom 4 element yagis at 130/87/47 ft. The station was the
same one that was used on 160M. Propagation played a role in the low
totals on this band, but it was very frustrating to keep it manned
while so little was going on.
10M- This is probably the last year for the current antenna system
on 10M. It consists of our "High" 4 element yagi at 87 ft. and a low
stack of 4 element yagis on 24 ft. booms that is a monster when SSN
gets up reasonable numbers. We used the same station as used on 80M
for 10M. Thanks to my op's who perservered my constant nagging to
keep a signal on the air - even when it was obvious that nothing was
doing there.
