######## Soapbox:
What a FUN contest! An experienced team with a balance of skills, a 1x1
callsign,
lots of high antennas and improving propagation overcame the hardware and
software
challenges and continuous line noise. We set a new record for CQP Multi-Multi
thanks
to our 1591 CW Qs and three bands with over 1000 Qs. 1200 DX QSOs gave the
antennas and
rotators a shakeout and we now know what work is needed for the upcoming
season. Things
look good for SS. Too bad we don't have these conditions for WPX.
The previous record of 493,928 / 4258 / 58 was set by Rich, N6KT, Jim, N6IG,
Gary,
VE7NTT, and all those other young guys (then) at the infamous Hotel DeMille
(aka
N6RO San Jose) while Ken was visiting PVRC stations CQP weekend in 1977. There
was
no CW incentive back then, all QSOs counted 2 pts. 10 SSB was the big band, >
2000 Qs.
We had a number of European stations say that there were large pileups of
Europeans
(and others) calling us on 20m (and 15m), but we heard nothing at N6O! In
fact, Kenny
called K1DG on the phone to confirm this, and sure enough, heard strong EU
stations
calling us on K1DG's radio, but there was just receiver hiss on our side. Our
apologies
to those we could not hear and a promise from Ken to give PG&E no rest until
they clean
up their arcing equipment. If you feel that we should have heard you, please
send a note
to Kenny, ken.silverman@airtouch.com, describing your station, as we want to
understand why.
N6O was a special commemorative callsign for the 100th aniversary of the
founding of
the town of Oakley, CA. Special mention to N0BBS for hot food, and of course,
extra
special thanks to Ken and Jean for the famous Radio Oakley hospitality.
We ran TRLog v6.11, set for the serial number by band option and Steve set up 4
computers networked, 4 interfaced radios, 3 DVPs and 1 SBDVP.

Steve banged them out on CW and it shows. We had a nice JA run at 1230Z.
Tony banged heads with the usual suspects on SSB for a bit just to
keep it
from being a total CW rout.

The EU pileup on Saturday night at 7005 was the best in recent memory;
guess
they thought N6O was a very rare IOTA! Hope the QSLs don't bring
too much
disappointment. Ken was tough but couldn't stay even with Bob.
Newbie Celia
kept the DVP busy during the day. Tony ran the only JAs in one 30
min. stretch
at 0700Z.

CQP became what IARU should be as EU stations surprisingly common. Bob
did his
usual masterful job, leading the effort again despite a dearth of
JAs, and so
was only allowed short breaks for food, drink and nature. We need
to add another
5 el at 90'

Working nearly 200 EU stations on 15m was a thrill! Kenny gave Bob some
serious
competition as EU was louder than the right coast for several hours.
Despite the
noise, we had the same number of EU QSOs on 15 as we did on 20m. We
also had a
great JA-VK-ZL run both days at 2100Z. Steve filled in with some CW.
10 -- 6(-2.5)/5 @ 100'/67' -- FT990, MLA2500

Occasional openings to SA and W4, despite the missing elements on the
high antenna.
Being on the band throughout daylight hours also paid off with a few
quick openings
into W1-2, (Three VT Qs in 5 min!) and we made some late VK-ZL
contacts as well.
S6-9 power line noise made it real work, though.
