.
My first full time effort in this contest. Thought that this would be the
year to do well because
the stack was working on 20M (top 20 broken last year, so only 50 or 100
footer) and was
expecting to make a lot of Q's there. That is until the ICE STORM hit
earlier in the week.
Top two antennas were resonating at about 13.7Mhz, bottom at about 13.9,
usable up to
about 14.2Mhz and 15/40/75 antennas also out of the band. Thought things
would thaw
before the contest. They did, but only partially. The 40/75M antennas were
OK, but 15/20
still had ice. Climbed a slippery tower two hours before the contest in
desperation to see
if I could shake any ice off, but didn't have any luck.

Started the contest on 20M and made 3 Q's in 6 minutes. Didn't feel loud,
and with only one
antenna partialy working, I headed to 40M. Rate picked up, but was still
thinking the ice
covered 20M antennas, and the totally non-functioning 15M @ 120'. If it
wasn't for the
great conditions here on 75M, might have quit. Thank God for all those
W8/W9's! I guess
you find Q's anywhere you can. Had N7TR's ratesheet from last year for
incentive, and
just kept pushing to stay on his tail.

Started Sunday morning needing VY1, KL7, and KH6. I knew that I needed to
go to 20M
to pick them up. Started calling CQ on the stack (4.1 SWR and reduced
power) and started
to work some guys. Had AI6V call in for PAC, and then two KL7's. Rate
seemed to be going
downhill, so went to 40M and thought I missed the sweep. Gave one last try
on 20M and
VY1JA called me! About fell out of the chair! After that, no more 20M!

Had a great time. Looking forward to two radio's and ice-free conditions
next year!
