TOTAL 976 976 248 SCORE: 242,048
Operated the first 4 hours solo. Took a 2.5 hour break once NJ2L arrived,
then we operated the last 5.5 hours as a team. Total of 9.5 hours.
160 - Inv-L with only 45' vertical. Worked OK to 1000 miles out. Called
K7RAT for what seemed like hours and never made the Q. No CA QSO.
80 - Inv vee at 80'. Suddenly, this antenna decided it was non-resonant
and with no tuner readily available, we struggled with 30W here.
40 - Phased Butternut verticals and an inverted vee at 45'. Truly amazed
at how much better the verticals were at times!!
20 - 4/4 fixed north. Other than a 2-1 SWR, this band continues to be
my best. Started the contest here and should've been on 15...
15 - 4L at 52' fixed north. Seemed to work OK. First time using this
antenna when it was pointed where it was intended to point.
10 - TA-33 at 37' fixed north. Adequate, but no killer antenna. Just as in
the 10M test, I was surprised to call very weak stations and have them
hear me. My 930 is probably deaf on 10.
Never networked two computers together at home before, so Rus, NJ2L
spent some time getting us hooked up. Did not bother to hook up any
sort of 2-rig switching for the first part, so my 2-rig operation the first 4
hours consisted of listening to rig 2's speaker! Somehow, RFI got into
the keying line of the main computer (bad sign during a LOW POWER
contest!), so sent by hand again for a few hours before realizing that I
still had a functional memory keyer to take advantage of. Had only one
keyer, so keyed rig 2 from my laptop directly. Expensive keyer.
Still have never put in a full effort in this one. Seems like the off-time
strategy is handled significantly differently by most. Sure seemed like
a struggle the last hour. M/2 was fun with Rus here, though!
Might overcome my deep-seated resistance to operating SSB and
pass out a few Qs this weekend in the K6LL QSO Party...
