Well, definitelly had double fun over the weekend. Did not quite make =
5000q's over the weekend, but what else would you expect if you leave in =
the middle of the contest
to go celebrate the local carnival parade. More on the carnival later =
on.
Even though I did not get quite the rest I would have liked before the =
contest, I felt pretty good about getting into the contest this weekend.
Started the contest on 10m at 8pm local time at my qth and normally =
conditions on 10m should have been dying down already by that time. But =
with the solar number as high as they were, it turns out I had my best =
rate=20
of the contest during that 1st hour, with 279 contacts. Keeping on the =
subject of rates, best 10 minute rate was a rate of 354 qso/hr for 10min =
in the last few minutes of the 1st hour and my best 1 minute rate was =
8qso in one minute for a burst rate of 480 qso/hour. WOW. Overall I =
worked about 30hours this contest and averaged around 100q/hr.
Back to the contest. I stayed a litle while more on 10m and switched to =
15m after that. by 0500z I was down to 160m with some fairly good =
conditions on 160m for once. No real high noice figures like usual, so =
most of the stations worked on 160m (my favorite) were relatively easy. =
I stayed basically on 160, 80 and 40m between 0500z and 0900z.=20
Took an 1 1/2 hour break about 0845z and got back briefly on 80m before =
our sunrise. Took a quick breakfast and got back on the bands =
alternatinging between 20, 15 and 10m. Spent most of the day on 10m with =
an occasional qsy for the some needed multipliers. By the time the 1st =
24 hours (8 pm local time saturday night) of the test was over I had =
about 3500 contacts in the log. Not too bad I tought.
In the meantime, the whole island was celebrating its last weekend of =
carnival and the kids had already come back from the Saturday San =
Nicolas Carnival Parade. I was also supposed to have joined that one, =
but decided to get some more q's in the log and join the carnival parade =
on Sunday when things would be a little slower on the bands.
By about 0530z (1:30am sunday morning) I decided that if I was going to =
be going in the carnival parade the next day I better get a good night =
sleep, so I took a full 5 hour sleep break. Woke up, semi well rested, =
the next morning and in between preparations to get to the carnival =
parade that morning, I still managed an additional 150q's between 1030z =
and 1400z.=20
My wife Marylin got home al dressed up about 10am and since she was =
ready to go, I shut down the radio with 4300+ contacts in the log.=20
And we was gone to the carnival parade!!=20
I sure forgot all about contesting for the next few hours.
As some of you might know, living in Aruba, once a year during the =
months of January and February, up through Ash-Wednesday, the island =
gets carnival fever. There are lots of carnival related activities, such =
as youth adn queen eledctions, calypso contest, carnival roadmarch =
contest and all sorts of oyther activities from the beginning of the =
year, just about every day leading up the the main carnival parade which =
this year happened to fall during the ARRL DX Contest weekend.=20
Oh whell, not wanting to miss either of the ARRL DX Contest or the =
Carnival parade, I though, I'll just do both.=20
So we joined a "back to the 60's flower power" carnival group called =
"groovy babies" for this years carnival, with had some simple but very =
colorfull costumes.=20
It wasn't untill one of the prices that was awarded to the Queens float =
of our group for the best HISTORICAL float, that I realized that for a =
lot of people, the sixties is just history, while I felt quite at home =
with those big bell bottoms. ;-)

Anyways, I did manage to work a few more q's afterwards on 10m, but =
neither my voice, nor myself were quite ready for handling the contest =
and my body was sore all over.=20
Managed to get 4848 q's in the logs by the end of the contest and even =
though my results of this year were less than last years ARRL DX Phone =
test, I must say I sure had DOUBLE the FUN, between doing the contest =
and the carnival parade in the same weekend.=20
Did have a strange report from one of the stations after the carnival =
parade, whose report was "YOU OWE ME A SPEAKER", I though WHAT =
&$&^????, this guy must be crazy, but after a couple of seconds, mind =
you I was still very tired since I had just gotten back from the =
carnival parade, I realized it was my signal he was talking about. That =
got a big smile on my face. Thanks for that nice report!!
Was surprised to the many stations that I was able to work on all 6 =
bands this year. At least my station performed very well this weekend =
and it sure was a joy working with the FT100MP/ACOM 2000A/TOPTEN/WX0B =
combination. The automation sure makes band changes just a matter of =
pressing the band button on the 1000MP.
