Conditions for the past two January VHF Contests have been pretty
good, and N5XU actually holds the M/L category record score for the
West Gulf Division in this contest, which we set in 1998. This year,
however, the band conditions were just terrible. The cold air kept the
tropo scatter conditions flat, there was no Es, and there were no inversions
to get any ducting. It wasn't until nearly the end of the contest that
I was even able to work outside of the state of Texas! For most
of Saturday, our multiplier total on 222 MHz exceeded our multiplier
total on 50 MHz. Nevertheless, there was a highlight - I worked DM91 on 50
MHz and EL07 on 222 MHz for all-time new ones for the club call.

John K5IUA (EL29), who won the 2000 June VHF contest single-op, said these
were the worst January contest band conditions he'd ever experienced. I have
yet to work a January or September VHF contest that didn't have 0 hours on
Sunday. This year I had three (when I wasn't asleep, that is.)

Activity from Houston and Austin both seemed normal, San Antonio activity
improved a lot, but activity from the DFW area is really down from a few years
ago. I think I worked only one station on one band from EM12.
