Comments:

Boy, this was painful.

Although I live at 42.5 degrees north latitude, I learned Friday that,
according to a page linked to spaceweather.com, my magnetic latitude is 53
degrees. This is one of the things I probably would have been better off not
knowing until after the contest was over!

After 15.5 hours of pounding my head against the proverbial wall, I checked
WWV. BIG mistake. When I heard the K index (7, and just down from a peak of
9--the top of the scale!), I simply pushed back from the radios and spent a few
hours doing other things with my wife and kids. I regret that immensely in
retrospect (bailing out, not spending time with the family!); I was just unable
to continue at that time.

When I got back to the radio a few hours later, things were improving
significantly. In WNY, I rely a lot on good hours to JA on Saturday evening; we
had none. That was disappointing, but Sunday evening made up for it somewhat. I
was also unhappy about the horrible conditions on 80 and 160. They were brutal.

The Saturday night EU sunrise opening was a non-starter on 20 meters, although
there were a few loud signals--but 40 was really good. Like the bottom of the
cycle, when this opening ended, all the bands were crappy until just before
local sunrise.

Sunday morning the SB-220 blew up after about 90 minutes of CQing on 20 meters.
It has always been a workhorse; now it needs HV work. Lost a few minutes just
before sunrise putting the single 3CX800 amplifier in its place, and it chugged
along great, but I felt like I was between the two engines of a fighter jet
(AL-1500 on one side, this amp on the other).

I was really glad for Sunday's conditions, because the contest ended on a high
note. If I can do Sunday numbers like this next year--after normal Saturday
hours--I'll be tickled pink!

Although the contest was relatively horrible, I am really glad to have had this
experience. I learned some things about the bands, about my own shortcomings
and how to deal with them to do better in the future; and about how much I take
normal conditions for granted. Brings to mind something our pastor said last
week: "The rain that soaks the laundry on the clothesline also waters the
flowers."
