Comments:
At the start of the contest conditions didn't seem to be very
promising, but taking forecaster K9LA at his word to the effect
that conditions would gradually improve as the weekend went on,
I violated one of my cardinal rules -- namely that I always work
10 meters hard the first day just in case conditions take it away
from us on the second day. Instead, putting faith in the
performance of my 8-el 15 meter Telrex to perform when conditions
are a bit down, I stayed on 15 Saturday morning until after 1400Z
before finally going to 10. The decision paid off as 10 was great
Sunday morning and my first full hour on 10 Sunday was a 199 hour.
By the way, that run wore this old man out (I'm taking my birth
certificate to the Social Security office this week to prepare
to get Medicare started -- that's right, come 10 meter contest
time I'll be 65) and after that hour I almost felt like I would
have to go back to bed right away, but I economized my movements
and with a bit of coffee I gradually recovered my equilibrium
while nursing 154 and 131 QSOs into the log in the succeeding
two hours.
I spent a lot more time in S&P mode than usual and it seems to
have paid off in better multiplier totals. The best thing that
happened during the weekend was the rain Friday night and
Saturday, gentle enough not to cause precip static on the Yagis
but wet enough to shut down all the line noises for most of the
weekend. It sure was great to be able to hear right down to the
receiver's noise floor most of the time.
