General notes:
==============
Holey smokes, that was a fantastic contest. My goals were 400 QSOs and I figured
I'd be doing well to bag 60,000 points. Made both goals, but I think 60,000
points will be weak in the standings, given the great conditions and
participation. Still, I am very happy with the result.
Antennas played well for what they're worth. Had to work hard S&P, and calling
CQ was mostly a bust. Had four or five callers in a row a few times but that's
about all.
I managed a rate of 53 QSOs per hour on 20 and 40, which is very nice to see.
Average hourly rate was 42. Probably should have gone to 40M a bit sooner, as it
was sizzling by the time I arrived.
Considering the antennas, 147 multipliers is all right. Missed a lot of VEs --
managed only BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Hit most of the states,
except Wyoming, Hawaii, Alaska, and maybe a few others.
All in all, this was a great contest. 412 QSOs is more than I've managed in any
contest from home, and in only 10 hours!
Discovered I was logging N5RZ as "TOR" for the first three of our four QSOs --
just figured he was very polite, saying "good afternoon (GA)" every time.
Realized on our final contact that his name was "GATOR." hi hi.
K7RAT was super loud everywhere, from up here in BC. So was W6EEN. Worked XE2MX
on all but 20M and 160M -- thanks for the mults LOCO. Worked Ron TG9/N0AT a
couple times.
Best name I heard in use? Either KC4WQ's BUD (of course), GATOR, or LOCO.
Operating Notes:
================
I opened on 10M, and stayed there pretty much the whole first hour. Went to 15M
at 1914z and worked till 2159z, when I took a half-hour break.
I took another half hour at 0030z (4:30 p.m. PDT) and broke for supper at 0206z,
returning at 0311z after trying solder up a 160M mod for my little outboard
tuner. Didn't work too well, so I used the internal tuner to load the G5RV --
good enough for a small handful of QSOs and 4 mults on 160 later in the
evening.
80M was very noisy when I first jumped down to 3.500. I was weak in every
direction, but I stayed with it... later in the evening, propagation perked up
from BC and I was able to get one of my best hours in the final 0500z hour.
