Comments:

Michael KD5HUN, Trent K5TWJ, Kevin KT5I, and I did Field Day this year from
Michael's ten acres just a few miles west of the WCARC site in Georgetown. It
was a blast! We put up 30 feet of Rohn 25G with a TA-33 tribander, 3 element 6M
beam, and a wire sloper for 40. We even had a rotator. Kevin lent the tower,
and still had his rotator and mast assembled in the top section from when he'd
taken it down, so we turned the antenna with Alliance, not Armstrong power! We
used Trent's IC-756 Pro II and set up in a fifth-wheel travel trailer that
Michael has borrowed from a friend. This was a great setup -- a nice operating
table, room for sleeping, A/C, even . . . a shower! Perfect after a hot morning
of setup . . . ahhhhhhh!

We started setting up about 9AM Saturday morning, and managed to stand the tower
up with six people. (Thanks for the advice, CTDXCCers.) All the antennas
worked great, although when the contest started, we were still soldering PL-259s
on coax extensions to get the feed lines into
the trailer.

We were about an hour and a half late getting on, but 20M was cooking. Trent was
cooking, too. He brought a smoker, and cooked up a big brisket and a big heap
of sausages. Awesome job, Trent! We didn't do too badly in the liquid
refreshment department, either. Mike, Trent, and I are beer nerds and
homebrewers so we sprang for a small keg of some of Austin's finest, Live Oak
Hefe Weizen. Mmmmm! http://www.liveoakbrewing.com/

I operated quite a bit and made almost all the CW contacts. We did a
catch-as-catch-can operator schedule, but were on the air continuously. I
started on 20 and we took turns Saturday evening. 40 started to be really
productive as it got dark. Kevin did a great job as "Captain Midnight", and I
took over about 4AM and found lots of people to work on 40. 15 was no good on
Saturday but opened a bit on Sunday, and Michael added a good batch of QSOs to
the log. We checked 10 a number of times but never heard a soul. We had a nice
little 6M opening to Florida Sunday morning.

We had more BBQ for Sunday lunch, and uh, . . . a bit of cerveza that we just
COULDN'T waste. At one point, though, we looked at each other and realized that
we had to take the tower DOWN, too! After beer? Nah, we decided. Let's do
that next weekend! Trent agreed to leave his rig, so Michael has a nice little
station to use for a few more days.
