This was first multi-single since 2003 CQWW SSB. Changes since that contest are
a different linear (Tentec Titan 425) and we lost the use of the 40M beam (due
to Osprey damage) in December, and put up a full size 1/4 wave elevated vertical
with 4 radials on garage roof.
The contest start was plagued with broadband power noise that manifested as a 10
db over S9 noise on 10-160M during the entire first night, and into the morning
Saturday. The noise subsided during Saturday afternoon and conditions remained
good for duration of contest. We hardly heard any action on 10M for first half
of contest. It was as if signals were skipping over Florida. Northeast,
Midwest, and South Central had openings to Europe and Africa, but they were not
heard here. However, did work 5R8 and VQ9 on 10 rather easily. Also worked FK8
who answered my CQ, along with ZK1. 15 was good but not as great as in the
past. 20 was also good but there were few stations that were really loud. We
did work JT on 20, along with HL and many JA's.
Equipment worked well, and 40M vertical did better than planned, but not as good
as a 2 element yagi at near 100 feet. Anyway, a good time was had by all.
Great to work the "OJ" memorial stations.
Go FCG... OJ's to all.
