Returning to Belize this year with my XYL, V31DK (K0ZV), I decided to enter
three contests in successive weekends. This was the first. Maybe I got my fix?
Probably not... Anyhow, much work was put into improving the low band
performance in light of declining conditions on ten. The 160 design seemed to
work well and conditions on 160 seemed excellent as I was getting quite a few
calls from loud Europeans! I didn't have any equipment problems and the
ergonomics were great so I was able to enter a kind of meditative state that
required a lot of concentration, but not much physical movement despite the
frenzy of battle. This reminded me of The Matrix - our hero's body is in a
holding tray, while his mind is fully engaged in battle. That's what it felt
like sometimes while running a pileup, jostling for a frequency or moving
multipliers around. The bugs really come out in the tropics, especially around 3
AM, and I really noticed it this year as there seemed to be a major amount of
bug contesting going on in tandem with mine. Occasionally the two got
intertwined when, for example, a Bombadier beetle smacked right into me. There
were more than a few Gekkos around to keep order when things started getting out
of hand. I seem to have the stay up for two days thing down pretty well now,
too, but it is still interesting to "watch" various parts of the brain shutting
down. One part that shut down was the part that understood what the contest was
all about - the logic of the exchange, etc., so there I was just before dawn on
Sunday morning operating away with no clue what it all meant! Fortunately,
understanding apparently not essential at that time, as I was still able to keep
operating away in this highly confused state until AK2P called about 20dB and 20
wpm louder and faster than anyone else and reset my mental CPU. So, thanks for
another great contest. Kudos to all the snappy operators (especially those who
nailed me on six bands) and congratulations to those who outscored me despite my
making it a bit harder this year. QSL via W1LLU.
Gear this year was TS850S; Acom 1000; Cushcraft A3; HF2V; and a homebrew 160m
inverted L. Location was on a salt water lagoon.
