Comments:
Fun contest - but a very long day! On the road at 4AM Saturday, arrive at K1PT
by 9AM. Some minor tower work and reinstalling the 160m wire filled the time
until the contest started at 2PM local. Plan off time to finish at 1:15AM, hit
the road by 1:30AM, and pull into the driveway at 6AM this morning. I've
learned that the only time to drive the 120 miles from Key West to the mainland
is at night - when the tourists aren't out - saving an hour or more on driving
time each way.
I started out on 10/15 but it was rough going - typical Florida thunderstorms
made horrible QRN on both bands, which made copy difficult. The weather caused
the power to barf once in mid QSO with K5ZD (sorry!). Paul (K1PT) kept an eye
on the weather, and at 1849Z told me that I should be OK, the storm was passing
about 4 miles to the north.
A few seconds later - FLASH-*BOOM* - and the quickest station shutdown in
history.
Fortunately, at least for me, the storms passed through quickly and it seemed
like they milked most of the energy from the sky - the skies were clear for the
rest of the contest. Many of my FCG club mates weren't as lucky and had bad
weather overhead for much longer than me.
20 and 40 were the money bands. No matter how much time I spent there, there
would always be callers. 10 was open, but no one was home. W6EEN was huge when
we tried there later in the afternoon.
My break time strategy seemed to work out well. Things were really slowing down
when I shut down at 0515. Off times: 1849-1920, 2302-2346, 0515-0600.
Lots of mults around - the W1's seemed well represented, at least in this neck
of the woods, with the exception of RI. J on two bands, HI on three, KL1V
booming through all lonely on 20, and a couple XE's. Found a VP5 and HI9 low in
the band, not necessarily working the contest but happy to give me the exchange
for the Q.
