We had fun here in the Pacific Northwest as several of us went SOSB-80. Congrats
to Tree, K7RAT for a new W7 record in Hi-Power SOSB-80 as he exercised his new 4
square. I went low power as the old W7 record was still in 3 digits and quickly
found N6MZ and N0AX stalking the same prize.
First got on about 5 hours into the test and heard OK2RZ, then worked him
after calling twice... a pretty good Q from the leftish coast. Hhmmmm, nothing
to this CW stuff I think to myself. That was the last of that as I spent the
next 30 minutes trying to work Zone 14 and 15 stations that I could hear and not
getting even one ?. I was beginning to understand that 100 watts on 80M is not
100 watts on 10M or 6M. Somehow I thought it would be easier on CW.
The great Ja ops gave us something to do each night and skyrocketed the
rate meter at times up to an astronomical 76/hour. When the rate would drop that
usually meant a real station (tm) must have parked himself close to my signal so
I would scurry off to S & P the band, which isn't that big, finding any new
calls that had decided to try to breach the QRM.
Thanks to the locals, K7RAT, M6MZ and N0AX for the competition and the
support. Makes this RF contesting worth the effort!
73 and I remain,
Lew
