Comments:

Since too many Italians have been going on expeditions, it was felt necessary to
start sending Americans to Italy to fill the resulting void.

DX contests are tough from California, but middle Europe is brutal. I don't
think I've ever had as many fights over frequencies in a contest as this. A 3
element 40 meter beam at 190 feet and a 250 Hz CW filter with additional
processing helped, but people would still move in closer than 100 Hz away at
times. There actually isn't enough spectrum on 40 for the contest activity!

No doubt I'll receive sympathy for having to suffer using only a vertical on 80.
Couldn't get the 3 element 80 meter beam (at only 150 feet) to match well enough
on CW in the time I allocated for set up.

Used only a single radio as the station is set for for DXing, and antennas are
essentially hard wired into a single radio (at a time) antenna switching system
box that is ouside. Was not set up to change bands rapidly, so never moved any
stations at all. Italy isn't all that rare, so didn't get asked to move once
either. Just like being in California!

Spent 2 hours S&Ping on 80 around 1900 the first night. 3500 to 3600 was full,
and had 87 in the first hour doing just that. Could have called CQ and probably
duplicated the QSO rate, but missed many of the multipliers.

Conditions seemed OK, but not great. Only one zone 3 on 15, and none on 80. No
USA ever even heard on 160. Heard one JA on 160, but he answered another's CQ.

As the years have taken their toll on me, I actually had to sleep for 12
minutes. It really made a difference.

Overall, had a great time. Many thanks to Gianni, I7RIZ and his XYL, Mariza, for
their outstanding hospitality.
