Comments:
This was my second chance to operate from Jeff's fabulous station up in PEI.
I had high hopes that propagation would hold up for the weekend but to no
avail.
I kept thinking if I could just push a little harder, maybe I could keep up with
last year's pace. Plus, I had a different approach to multipliers. It didn't
quite work out the way I planned.
When the contest started, I tried to run on 40. NOT.
After 20 mins, Jeff comes into the shack and looks at the log. He quips " NT,
what are you doing? This isn't Sweepstakes, why are you running stateside?"
I quipped back: " I'm not running stateside, I am running around CALLING
stateside!". This was even harder considering almost every QSO required a repeat
of my callsign, most copied UY2NT. The band sounded like mush, not much dx
coming thru.
Anyway, it got better when I went to 80 and 160. Those bands are just fantastic
up there. EU seems to come in virtually at will. Had a 140 hour on 160 @06z; you
can hear a pin drop with Jeff's rx capability on topband. The vertical arrays on
80/160 are great antennas.
The downside of being up north this weekend were the high bands. 15 was OK, but
I could only work EU. The mults were hard to come by. It literally took me 15
minutes to work JA on 15. Most of them CQ'd in my face, but I finally got JA3YBK
to copy me after repeating the call many many times.
10 mtrs was a disaster mult-wise. My plan was thrown out the window, and could
only work a few stations scatter.The conditions were a step worse up there,
since I could hear KC1XX and others running on 10, but not a peep of who they
were working. In retrospect, I should have worked more guys on 10m Saturday, but
I was hoping the band would be improved by Sunday. Didn't happen. The only
opening we had was a nice Stateside run at 18-19z, but there are no mults in
that:<).
I missed alot of easy mults too, only worked D4B and CN2R on a couple of bands.
I was always looking, kept running into EA8ZS but not much else out of Africa. I
am learning that VY2 is a great place to run EU, but you have to think outside
the box for mults. I guess I am getting too old to get out of my box! Spent alot
of time tuning for A61AJ, and had trouble finding them too. Only worked them
on 20/80. The only band I could find the 3D2 boys was on 160 at sunrise!
Anyway, it was still fun. As K1DG says, "a weekend of poor conditions in the CW
CQWW is still way better than doing anything else with your time!"
K1ZM is a marvelous host, and has a beautiful house up there. Almost like being
in a hotel, with your own chef. He always made sure there was plenty of food for
me. Since I didn't blow anything up, I think he might even invite me back!
Thanks to everyone for calling, worked alot of old friends. Amazed how quickly
everyone knew it was me with that callsign, but guess the suffix gives it
away.
Got alot of ZF2NT's and N2NT's returned however when calling, but that's all in
the NT tradition.
