Comments:
This year?s contest became an unexpected Single OP effort, since a planned Multi
OP activity had to be called off two days before the contest. Sending an email
to the MRRC reflector resulted in the response from Dennis, KT8X who offered me
his nice one tower setup for the contest.
Dennis amplifier was out for repair, so my options were pretty much SOAB/LP or
QRP. I opted for QRP, since I would have lacked motivation to do Low Power again
from a station inferior to K8CC's setup which I had used the prior year. Also
conditions were expected less great than in 2003. Having worked CQWW as SOAB QRP
from DL in 1995 and numerous other contests in the 5W category, I had an idea
how to do it and what to expect. I set my target to make it into the QRP box
scores with 1000 QSOs and 430 Multipliers.
Saturday started ok and I was pretty much on track until Saturday 15Z. But when
the first round of EU Big Guns had been worked on the high bands, things slowed
down. Calling CQ for a few minutes on various frequencies did not result in a
single QSO. Conditions got weaker and even worse on Sunday, and so I had to
resign myself to S&P for the remainder of the contest. 10m yielded 11 Europeans
(only 2 on Sunday) from EA, EA6, CT and S5. There were many multis that I just
could not work ?normal for QRP, and I did not waste too much time on exotic
calls since another, more common multiplier was probably just around the
corner.
Highlights were VK6LW and three(!) KH2s on 15m, finding several rare ones before
the Cluster Hammer hit them (see ES5TV?s writeup of Nov 30), cracking several
smaller pile-ups with the right combination of timing, CW speed and selection of
my relative TX frequency, as well as working Mike, VK9NW who got me on the first
call, while I could barely hear him.
Murphy stayed pretty much away and only showed up on Sunday afternoon stopping
the KT-34XA from working on 10m.
Now, that the first results have come in, it looks like a pretty good US score.
Congrats to P40A (KK9A) for a tremendous QRP score of almost 5M.
Many thanks to Dennis and Stephanie for their outstanding hospitality during my
stay there!
