Comments:

What a difference a year makes! Propagation again demonstrated how difficult it
is to guess how you are going to do before the contest starts. Last year
conditions seemed magic from this QTH. Other commitments kept me from operating
full-time, but everytime I was able to get on conditions were wonderful. This
year conditions would change in an instant. Last year I worked 67 California
stations -- this year 7 (and all those on backscatter). But to make up for the
lack of 6's, last year I worked no JA's, this year 49. Last year I worked 14
stations from Alberta, Idaho, and Utah, this year none. My opening into JA was
typical -- it lasted for about 45 minutes late Saturday afternoon, and when it
ended it ended just like someone had turned off a switch -- no fading away, just
a sudden ending. Where there had previously been lots of JAs there were none.
I was hoping for a repeat on Sunday aftenoon, but by Sunday afternoon I could
only hear a few strong South American stations. The whole experience again
reinforced the idea that it is the unpredictability that makes it all fun!
