Comments:
After the relative success in 2004 WPX CW it was determined that a further score
improvement could be easily achieved by puting everything on a solid scientific
base. A new contest strategy was developed by the Contest Research Institute
funded by the International Contest Science Foundation. The strategy
implementation allowed me to get to the site 5 minutes before the contest, go
back home (10 miles drive) two times to have a decent meal, take a nap, shower,
watch a movie, prove to KB3JErK that Man United are a bunch of loosers and
Liverpool would kick their butt anytime, smoke the whole pack of smokes (3
minutes each in turbo mode), etc, and still get 25% score improvement over the
last's year score.
Indeed, the strategy was tailored for 9.3Meg but then this score would be tough
to beat in 2006, so it was re-designed with the compromise value of 7.1Meg.
WA3FET kinda messed up the strategy a little bit by showing up at the site 2
hours earlier to check on antennas, fix 2 of the Beverages (no heavy substances
used this time), fed coal to the main amplifiers and put a new crystal in 40
meters take-off angle controlling device. That's where the extra 0.5Meg comes
from. Science rocks, isnt't it ?
The newly awarded research grant to CRI is about an improved guidance system for
the Cruise missile. The system would lock onto the callsign of the stations who
would start CQing on your frequency while you're trying to get the number out of
that German guy who just finished building his new 3 transistor TX and hooked it
to the lawn chair. At the initial testing stage of the new system, the guys
using a "?" instead of QRL? AND listening for more then 13.4 nanoseconds, will
be treated the same way. They are going to get a sorry card, though. If the
research budget permits, at some later stage they're going to be pampered with
lasers.
After all, it was quite a decent contest. Good Saturday and a "bloody Sunday".
40/20 were the usual workhorses with 15 kicking in on Saturday, 80 was quiet
enough on Sunday to provide a short EU run. The rates were generally low but
with all of the serial number refills it can't be different. Some guy, who
responded with a different number each time I asked him to repeat his number,
reminded me why I did quit operate ARI contest on CW seriously in the middle of
90's.
10 meters ? Well, KT1V has the exactly right attitude about it.
There was some pretty tough competition this year though. Every time I would
hear K3ZO, KT3Y, AA3B, KT1V, WC1M, KN1DX, KM9P, NQ4I, NY4A, KM7W, NK7U I would
push the second radio harder, until a real danger of the radio falling off the
table emerged. The effect of K5ZD was exactly the opposite - a difference less
than a 500 Q would make me pull the radio back with 2 cm.
All in all I had a lot of fun and I hope you all did too. Thanks to WA3FET not
only for the use of the station but for all the support and encouragement.
