This contest was fun. I went single op this year since WM5R was out
of town for the weekend. Since I was single op I decided I would
finally get the 1.2Ghz station working. I put up the loop yagi the
monday before the contest and heard my first signal on the band when I
made the first QSO on 1.2Ghz in the contest. The old Microwave
Modules transverter still works but it's noise figure is at least 3 db
or or maybe more than 6 db. I am going to fix this and hope to be on
the band more in the coming contests. I also have an amp for this
band (pair of 2c39) but it was not working quite right most of the
time I will have to figure that out as well. Other than that all the
other equipment worked.

Six meters was petty good on Saturday but it sure seemed like activity
was down - maybe due to many thunderstorms. The band was open to most
of the country (1 hop range for several hours) but the huge rates of
previous years never happened. Sunday (for the 3rd or 4th year) was a
total shutout.

I did manage two 144 Mhz Es QSOs in the first hour - I think I could
have made a few more but I was busy on 6 meters and was a bit late in
going to 2 meters to call CQ.

The rover activity seemed to be better than I recall it in the last
few years and this really helped the high band totals quite a bit.
N5RZ/R was worked in many grids - I just need to get him QRV on 222
and 1296. N5AC/R was also quite active and had all the bands I did
plus more. ND2X/R went out on Sunday and brighten up a rather slow
end to the contest by going to several new grids and also by having
1296 and 222 from some new band/mults. He recently got a new truck
and this was it's frist rove. HIs 1296 station seems to hear very
well as he was able to work my 2 watts from several grids were is was
not much out of my noise.

Except for the lack of a good sunday on 6 meters I had a great time
and this has me fired up to do more single ops in the VHF contests.
Maybe I will give September a shot as it has been a few years
since I have tried that contest.
