We spent the first 10 minutes on 10 meters but only managed to work 7 local
stations. We listened for other stations and beacons on 10 in the first 3
hours, but nothing more was heard.
15 meters had very little activity after the first hour, but we continued to
hear a few stations which dwindled to just Florida by the end of the 2100 hour.
We were able to move several stations from 20 to 15 even when it seemed that we
were the only station left on the band. Thanks to all that tried moving for
us.
20 meters was great at the start but rates plummeted in the mid to late
afternoon, only to pick up again in the evening. We probably could have
continued to work a great rate on 20 but needed to move to 80 for mults in the
last couple of hours.
We finally moved from 15 to 40 at 2200, but mostly we could hear stations to our
east that couldn't hear us. In the 0200 hour the rate on 40 finally picked up
and we could then work everyone we could hear.
80 meters really hurt this year. We briefly went to 80 at 0310Z, but no one
could hear us and we made 0 Q's in 10 minutes. We returned to 20 for a while
and finally made our first 80-meter Q at 0350Z. Even at the end of the contest
we couldn't be heard by several very loud stations in the south and eastern US.
Our 4-square seemed to have stuck relays and signals/noise didn't change as we
switched the phasing. We weren't sure what direction it was favoring so most of
our Q's were made with an inverted vee.
160 meters was practically dead here. I briefly heard W4AN and N5QQ, but
couldn't work either. KT0R was really loud for a long time and was the only
station worked east of Colorado.
We managed to man both run stations for the entire 12 hours, but only had a
third operator for spotting during the first 3 hours. When conditions are this
poor a spotter can really be helpful in finding other stations to work between
answers to CQs. I'm looking forward to the winter NAQP and better band
conditions.
