Hi all,
The numbers above are rough from memory only, but close. Had massive runs into
EU on all bands, and this year 40m into EU was orderly ! The 10m propagation
into the Americas never ocurred, albeit I watched it very closely.
Highlights were running a pileup on 75m before the surface wave radar hit me at
+10dB/9 (and that was with a 6dB attenuator in the receiver). Also exceeding my
QSO target on 160m by 20% was very satisfying, with quite a pileup heard on 1843
- but I stood no chance behind that racket.
10m was the major disappointment, with over 1000 less QSO's on 10m compared to
last year - identical setup, 5ele monobander, TL922 and IC756pro3.
Which makes me ask.. the IC756pro3 has all sorts of little audio artifacts when
listening to some shortwave AM stations (in either SSB or AM modes).. like
periodic clicking. Shortwave broadcast stations are actually useful here when
not playing ham radio. My first reaction was to turn off the noise blanker, and
then the noise reduction, and then put maximum attenuation into the receiver...
with zero effect.
Charlie's (VK9XG) radio couldn't cover that part of the band to see if it was
some sort of station ID data.. we did a quick self test on the Pro3 receiver
using the marker - and it seemed to pass OK. This warrants another look..
Lots of fun here this year, the wet season arrived early and working in the
crazy humidity here was a slow chore. I've lost 3kg.
I talked Charlie (W0YG) into bring a microphone (he'd never used it before:-)
with the intent to set a single band record on island.. Reluctantly agreeing,
and prising him from the key on 160m during the CQWW event, he will rank well.
The station was a joint effort between Charlie and myself, and I must than him
for leaving the Colorado snow behind. With two complete and independant
stations, we negotiated access to active band antenna coax's during the CQWW
event. I liked Charlies quote "If I use the microphone, someone may hear me".
