Comments:

Like last year, I wasn't able to put in a full-time effort -- the women's church
retreat has been moved to SS CW weekend and I had kid duty. At least I was able
to get on here and there for an almost 50% effort.

Last year I did the sweep in record time (for me) -- 8 hours. This year I missed
one section -- NL -- but not for lack of trying! I would have bet no NL station
was on, but apparently there were several. Guess that's one problem with a
limited effort, especially when the needed section is close and the skip is long
-- reports from NL I've seen so far show a lot more activity on 20 than 80, and
it's unlikely I would have heard them above 40. VT was kinda hard this year, too
-- only heard/worked one, and that was in response to a "need VT" call. Heck,
it's right next door. Many have mentioned missing ND. That one was very tough
and I was lucky to get it. NT is always a challenge, but I lucked out and ran
into VY1JA on 15 at around 1800z Saturday. He was so weak there was no way I
could have copied the exchange -- that is, until I noticed the rig's preamp was
off! That provided just enough boost for me to work him. Thanks again, J! On the
positive side, the DX sections came early, as did several I always worry about
like UT, MT, MAR, etc. Noticed that NLI wasn't plentiful. What's with that?

Didn't hear a lot of VEs on this time -- VE6 and VE7 were pretty active, but
very few VE1, VE2, VE3, VE4 and VE5. Lack of VE3 is unusual. Maybe the long skip
played a part. Perhaps we need to give VEs better incentive to participate --
like a warm coat instead of a mug. Or maybe a hot toddy to go in the mug...

Like others, I had the impression activity was down. Low sunspots or good
football games? It's a shame, because this is one of the best contests we have.

Hopefully I'll get to do a full effort again. Meanwhile, thanks for the Qs and
see you next year.

73, Dick WC1M
