This house is being totally remodeled, but had the tower and antennas I
needed, so I had to pack and bring all the equipment, radio, and computers
I needed to the house and set it up Friday night to be ready for Sunday.
A real "expedition" style operation - amongst the sawdust and table saws.
Either by luck or good planning I had brought all the parts and connectors
I needed to assemble a working station. However, the contractor seemed
intent on always leaving the power to the house OFF, even though I had discussed
my need for power on this weekend with him several weeks in
advance. I managed to catch the electrician on the way out the door Friday night
and make him hook the power back up to the room I planned to use. "Oh yeah,
forgot about that..."
It is quite a thrill to start up with a new call Sunday morning, within a
few minutes all the big guns have found you and are battling over the "fresh
meat". I could just CQ for the first few hours and collect contacts. A good
thing, since my internet connection was refusing to work and it looked like I
would be without telnet spots. Several hours later it started working, so I was
finally really a "U" precedence.
I was running low power (due to the limited electrical supply), so I didn't
have great luck trying to bust any pileups. It was fun to catch an opening
on 10m and bag an easy 50 contacts, much easier than fighting the heavy
competition on 20m and 15m.
Despite being tired of operating by Sunday afternoon, I stuck to it with
minimal breaks and put in a score 80% of my previous day's score that had
high-power and big antennas! SO, I was pleased with my Sunday, but still below
my goal for the weekend. Either I'm slowing down or the sunspots really are in
decline.
