Comments:
I arrived at the shack just before 0400Z to discover that neither our new
160-meter transmitting antenna or inverted vee were working. Not wanting to
deal with either in the dark and rain, I tried tuning various other antennas on
160.
I couldn't get either of the 80-meter inverted vees to show a good SWR at the
transmitter even though the high-power tuner showed a low SWR. I then decided
just to use the internal tuner in the FT1000MP and loaded up the 80-meter
4-square using low power. I discovered that the SW position was best for
hearing to the east on 160. Probably most of the transmitted power was going
into the dummy load, but I was working stations.
The rain static got very bad for a while and I tried listening on the beverages,
but the receiver was overloaded by a local station (we need one of those roofing
filters!) so the beverages couldn't be used.
I was on for just over 2 hours before I had to go home. Risto, W6RK, made a few
more Q's after I left to make it a M/S effort. Thanks to all for the Q's.
Hopefully we'll have a real 160-meter antenna working by the next contest.
-Mike, N7MH
