I recently moved to North Carolina and with various obligations I really didn?t
plan on operating CQWW CW this year. However, the temptation was too great and
at the last minute I decided to make a quick trip to Aruba for the contest. I
arrived Wednesday evening and I set up the station and temporary antennas on
Thursday. Friday was a day of leisure and I spent much of the day at the beach
and downtown. I operated this contest in the QRP (5 watt) category, just as I
did last year. The low bands were quiet and I was off to a very nice start
during the first evening. 40m was in terrific shape and I was able to run U.S.
and European stations most of the night. I was also able to work a lot of
stations on 80m. On 160m, I worked the close stations but the far stations
apparently couldn?t hear me at all. Saturday morning, 15m had fantastic
openings to Europe and the U.S. The band opened early and I jumped right from
40m to 15m, skipping 20m. I had 172 / QSO hour on 15m, which was definitely
exciting for QRP. 10m was also open pretty well into the U.S. on Saturday.
On Sunday, I spent more time on 20m to pick up the multipliers that I had
skipped on Saturday. The band was very crowded well up into the lower portion
of the phone segment. I kept loosing my frequency to higher power stations,
which became frustrating. I finished the contest with 87 less QSO?s, 10 less
zones and 2 more countries than last year. Low band conditions were
exceptional, however the openings on 10m were limited and I worked only 11
countries and 11 zones on that band. Immediately after the contest I had a
nice dinner with many other contesters in Aruba. After dinner I started
dissembling the station before going to bed. Early Monday morning, I took down
all of the temporary antennas and packed for my afternoon flight home. This
was not a restful Caribbean vacation, but it certainly was a lot of fun. Thank
