Comments:
This was a good shakedown for a bunch of rebuilt antennas.
Amazing how well my little 2 el Cushcraft did on 40. (But
I'm still gonna put my big yagi up this spring!). It
was an absolutely quiet weekend here with zero QRN on the
low bands. Signals were weak on 160 but very plentiful, and
I think this was the first time I worked a meaningful number
of EU on that band in a DX contest from here. For some
reason my 160m vertical is getting out better now that I
have changed a few antenna configurations around it.
The only drag was that my job has gotten super busy and I
was at work here until 2230z. Hadn't been on the air all week,
but fortunately everything fired up and worked perfectly. My
apologies to the guys east dealing with wind and the DXpedition
guys working all week putting up antennas, this contest was
a weekend affair in W9!!
This was about as good of an ARRL contest as I can remember.
DX activity was outstanding, and the pileups/frequencies were
well behaved. The weirdest thing was hearing someone calling
CQ contest on 20m at the end signing ZF1A with a CQ machine at
40 WPM, ignoring those calling. Highlights included working
UA9AYA for the first time on 80m -- thanks Willy! It was also
fun on 15m -- either the band was open, or it was shut. I
had a big pile calling me on 15m Sunday morning that was more
intense than anything I remember, but by 1600z the band was
pretty much done.
