I love the WPX because it is the last major contest, where you can expect
to be competitive in SOAB, with a relatively modest non-SO2R station.
I also enjoy the 36h time format, extremely cool for the "senior" operators
like me ("quoi-que" I would have enjoyed a few more hours).
The objective was 10M points and DF4SA (/CT3) LP-record...
Not good enough for this time ! (congrats Conn, your record is still alive!)
However, a great weekend contest which I will remember as one of the best
ever, despite the technical problems.
Had planned for 1000Q on 40m with the 12 hours off-time during daytime.
Everything started well, but after some 400 40m qso's, the beam suddenly
showed infinite VSWR (the balun over-heating due to high SWR?), forcing me
to switch to the dipole, with an immediate rate drop easily explained by
some 25dB signaldrop toward EU (The dipole being for NW/SE).
At this point, maybe I should have changed my strategy and go to bed, but I
insisted, I just did a bit of 80 which I was not initially planning...
I did the whole second night at relatively low rate with the dipole, working
mainly W stations... and, while I was not counting anymore on it, the beam
came back to life on sunday evening for a couple of good 40m hours, just
before failing again near the contest end.
The Unexpected good conditions on 15m toward JA, W and EU made it my first
choice during sunlight hours; It has been good to be able to escape from the
overcrowded 20m. I could not really enjoy the 80 and 160, due to the dipole
orientation (W stronger than EU's on 80 but vy few of them!), and urban noise.
10m was open on E's most of the time during the day, but I heard more CB'ers
than contesters on this band ! Also heard a few E-HP eastern EU stations who
could not copy my poor 80W on 10m!
Initially I had planned to use Hassan's JST-135 transceiver, but lacking the
CAT, and having troubles with the high-pitch and loud sidetone, I preferred my
old 706 (one of the first ones) brought with me for 6m... with a cooling fan on
it, no problem... No problem either with N1MM-logger absolutely trouble free
this time.
I'd like to thanks Hassan CN8SG for his great hospitality, the pre-contest
efforts to fix the antennas and rotator and for his stainless sense of humor,
joviality and happiness during the contest and around...
Compared to CN2DX location I used for the CQWW, I suffered a bit from the
urban noise, especially during night due to some defective fluorescent street
lights, but despite the quite high SWR (Hassan's antennas are tuned for SSB),
the aerial performance was there, confirming my belief that the location of
an antenna is probably the most important factor of an overall HF aerial
performance, probably more important than the antenna gain, F/B ratio and even
the SWR...
Last but not least I'd like also to thanks Mohamed CN8PA for his help in
Casablanca, Saaid CN8WW for his hospitalitality in Rabat, Kacem CN8LR, ARRAM
and ANARTS for the licence and the people of Morocco in General for his
friendliness...
