CQ WPX CW 2006, WX5S(@W6YX)

Our operators included WA6O, K6OWL, W6RK, W6LD, WX5S, N6DE and N7MH. The new
addition to the operator roster and our secret weapon this year was the hired
gun Mike WA6O. He operated long hours, both nights and kept QSOs coming in with
steady high rates. We hope to see you soon again Mike! Everyone else did great
job, too, and we managed to keep both stations QRV for the whole contest. We
were able to beat our claimed score by about 1M from couple of previous years.

Propagation:

80m: we didn't have too much time for 80m because other bands kept us busy.
40m: JAs kept coming on 40m until about 15Z. Not too many Europeans worked on
40m. We heard the strong stations but it was difficult to get through the noise
and east coast wall.
20m: the main band that stayed open nearly 24h/day. Propagation to Europe was
very good. The band stayed open to Europe until about 08Z.
15m: better than expected. We worked Europeans until late afternoon and we also
noticed an interesting opening to JA/Northern and Eastern Europe around 08-10Z.
10m: also surprisingly good. We even worked couple of JAs on Saturday. On
Sunday it was in a good shape to U.S.A. (Sporadic-E all day on 6m, too).

We are dissapointed at the JA activity. It has gone down over the past years.
Signals were strong but there just weren't as many stations to work like years
ago. We even worked some JAs on 10m and their spots said we were strong. Where
has all JAs gone? Old hams getting too old, and young people playing with their
iPods and computers? Or were they busy with with other things this weekend
(storms/earthquake/final exams/some sports event?) or just pointing antennas to
other directions (EU)? This is making it harder and harder to make a good score
from west coast.

It was a lot of fun! Below are some stats and you can find graphs and even more
stats at http://www.w6rk.com/.

73!
