Comments:

At last, a CQWW CW weekend with less intense static crashes on the low
bands.

The 10m opening to Europe was expected, but working HC8N was not!
The high band antenna setup at the ZS9X station is not up to scratch
yet and I probably lost many east-west mults with the 10M5 fixed to
Europe.

15m was my top band with the highest QSO total and best rates. The highlights
here were calls from AH8I and T88MR on the long path over USA. AH8I was my
only Zone 32 QSO the entire weekend!

20m is not my favourite band... About 16 hours into the contest I looked at the
TRLog screen to compare QSO/band totals and I saw I had 50 QSOs and exactly 50
country mults! These were all from 2nd radio QSOs or from moving rarer mults
so I knew I had to do something real soon about 20m. At that stage I already
had 400+ QSOs on 40m. Strong early afternoon signals from NA helped to make up
the 20m totals.

40m was wide open a expected but trying to run EU/NA at midnight on both nights
was difficult. Being semi-comatose tired on Sunday night did not help either.
Picking out calls when one only one station is calling was difficult enough,
let alone trying to handle a huge pile-up. I eventually slowed down to about
25 WPM high up in the band and worked a steady run that I could almost handle
with the combined fatigue and QRN. Running at a slower speed seemed to keep a
low enough profile not to excite the
"I-will-keep-on-calling-in-a-pile-up-even-if-I-am-not-being-called" types. The
disadvantage is that the frequency can easily be stolen which happened a few
times!

80m was great with good sunrise openings on both days to EU and NA. Highlights
were BA7RF with a big signal and surprise calls from XE1NTT/2,6Y3R and 6W1RW.
TZ5A was S9+ on all bands all the time! At around 5800km from ZS, they were the

closest big multi station to ZS. With TZ much closer to Europe than ZS I can
only imagine how loud they were there.

A lot of QSB on 160m but when it was open the big signal honours go to S50U and
RA6AX.

W8AV,and K8AZ was consistently strong on all bands I heard them. Z38N seemed
to be everywhere - good operator!

This was my first attempt at the CQWW CW from the ZS9X contest station. As the
antenna farm grows you can expect more activity from there in other contests by
other operators as well.

My score is 10% over my 2003 Zone 38 record which were done with a full 48 hour
effort and better conditions. Having a 3 (+1 extra snooze!) hour nap in the
middle of the contest this time probably puts me in the not so serious
contester category but I feel much better today than I did in 2003 after the
contest! I timed the sleep in the early hours of the morning which were very
slow during the WW SSB as ZS9X. Not sure how much it hurt the score, it
probably cost me breaking the 8M points barrier!

Thanks for all the QSOs and sorry for asking so many repeats in the end on
40m!

Also thanks to the members of the ZS9X contest station for their help during
the preparation.

GL

Bernie, ZS4TX
