ARRL RTTY RU 2007

The BC DX Club engages in friendly cut-throat competition with the Western
Washington and Wilamette Valley (Oregon) DX Clubs.  Each club totals their
members' scores for certain DX contests, some SSB, some CW and some RTTY.  The
club with the most points at the time of our annual convention wins the trophy.
 As I fell asleep and snored during a BC DX Club meeting, I was appointed club
chairman of this activity.  Hardly any of our members did RTTY contesting. 
Consequently, I've been doing some running around helping members get going on
RTTY.

I've been helping VE7UF with the transition from CT to N1MM as well as
introducing him to RTTY contesting.  The first RTTY test we entered was CQ WW. 
While we got everything working, sort of, we didn't really have time to document
everything so the intent of this trip wa to do things in an organized fashion
and document them so the setup can be easily duplicated for future RTTY tests
without me having to be here.  Oh, and we wanted to have some contest fun
also.

I did some prop predictions with W6EL ahead of time.  Looked like it was going
to be a low band test with 80m really hopping.  No prop at all on 15, almost
nothing into Eu or Ja on 20, some Eu time on 40 and lots on 80. Duane's station
is pretty good on the low bands so I was really looking forward to this.

We managed to get everything functioning about half an hour after the start of
the test.  We decided to do Multi Single and I drew the first shift.  Felt
weird to not have someone sitting at the 2nd op position but no M/2 category in
ARRL RU.

I hadn't been operating very long when Duane said, "You know, if we activated
the 2nd op position under your call, we'd probably make more total points for
the club", so that's what we did.

So that's how it is that we have VE7FO operating VE7UF at VE7UF and VE7UF
operating VE7FO at VE7UF.  Are you confused yet?  We are.

One amusing thing which came out of this.  I worked VA7ST and told him that it
was VE7FO at the keys.  A while later, Duane told me that he (as VE7FO) had
just worked VA7ST.  We had a lot of fun trying to imagine what was going
through Bud's head at tht time.

Not too much to say about the actual test.  We made lots of Qs on 15, not too
bad on 20 and the low bands sucked.  Almost no Eu or Ja on any band.  Both
Duane and I managed to get the ten minute rate up to around 148 for short
periods of time which pleased us.

One problem we ran into.  It's a perennial one but it seemed much more
prevalent in this test, and that's people putting carriage returns at the ends
of their macros.  This gives those of us who use mouse clicks to get a call
into the call window absolute fits.  What happens is that, just as I click on a
call and hit Return to send it the dreaded carriage return comes along and moves
the call up one line and I click on empty space and hit Return.  This means that
the call doesn't get sent.  If I'm running, this means that everything stops
while I locate the call and click on it again.  I've seen some who had so many
carrige returns that their call scrolled right off the top of the screen. 
Needless to say, if there's a choice of who to call, it isn't him.

So, please, here are a couple of tips to help the guy you're calling.

A carriage return to make your stuff stand out is a great idea.  Just put it at
the beginning of the macro, not the end.  Just one per macro please.

Another one is to add a space at the end of your macros.  This way there's less
likelihood of garbage characters being added on to the end of, for example, your
call at the receive end.  Makes it much quicker to get your call into the call
field.

Probably everybody reading this knows this stuff but, if you don't, I hope
you'll try it out.
