After our local club couldn't find anyone to organize Field Day, a few friends
decided to get together to get on and make an appearance. Most of those
participating have been licensed a little over a year, and made their first
QSO's on our GOTA station during last years Field Day.

We wanted to do a small and casual operation - no major setup or multiple
stations involved. Mike, KI4KTP, gave us the OK to operate from the Red Cross
Chapter radio room (and stopped by later for a visit). We used the wire
antenna that was already part of the station there.

On Saturday, Jill, KI4PJB, Mona, KI4PJC, and Christine, KI4PJD, did most of the
operating on phone. George, K5KG, stopped by late Saturday afternoon, took some
photos and sat down for a few Phone and CW QSO's.

We have been working on recruiting CERT (Community Emergency Response Team)
members into Amateur radio. We extended an invitation to CERT members to come
out and see what we were doing. Several did come out, and mentioned they have
been studying for their license. We got one of them, Al, on the radio to make
a few QSO's, and he had a total blast. He's been wanting to become a ham since
he was a teenager ... and now he's even more motivated to finish studying and
get licensed!

Mona and Jill got us up to 500 QSO's early Sunday morning ... then headed home
to grab some sleep. Before they left, they said (half joking?) they wanted to
see 1,000 QSO's when they got back!

I was the only one left to operate, so spent the time making up the CW QSO
deficit. Jumped around the bands to work what I could - and fighting to stay
awake!

Sunday morning 15 was starting to open, and I still had some ground to cover,
before I got to 1,000 QSO's ... so I broke down, and went over to 15 phone and
caught the band opening up ... and had a fantastic run ... rate meter in the
180's and 190's (not bad for a wire!). Right in the middle, the logging
program crashed ... and had to reboot. Once I got it going again, and logged
the guy I was working ... gave a "QRZ!" ... and it sounded like everyone had
waited around (thanks guys!!!) ... instant "pile up"!

When Jill arrived shortly before noon on Sunday ... I had not made 1,000 QSO's.
Only had around 980 at that time! But, we thought that was close enough ... so
I worked up to 1,000 ... and let Jill take it the rest of the way - except for
about 15 minutes of CW at the end.

We accomplished our goal of getting on, making some contacts (and doing way
better than we expected), introduced ham radio to some new people, and most of
all ... we had fun!

Ron, WD4AHZ
