Comments:

Was going to operate HP as usual, but Friday night Radio 1 developed some weird
kind of terminal logic illness (756 PRO2 -- symptom is buttons operating or not
operating erratically). I decided to use my old FT1000D as a replacement, and
it occurred to me that since it is a 200-watt beast, and LP in CQP allows 200
watts, it might be interesting to go LP for the first time since 1996.
It was fun using the FT1000D. It certainly sounds better than the PRO2, and
you gotta love those big, smooth knobs and the APF. Unfortunately, it would
only talk to the computer in one direction (i.e., it would take commands but
not report back freq or mode), so I had to be a bit careful in the logging.
LP turned this into a CW contest. I spent 6 hours on phone and 17 on CW, not
particularly by choice, but because I could never get anything going on phone,
until the very last hour of the contest when I finally had a decent phone run
on 20.
Another new thing was that I have modified my software to use Winkey USB
from K1EL. After two weeks of programming, it worked perfectly to eliminate
all CW "Windows stutter." I experimented with three modes of speed control: 1)
computer control computer sending and paddle, 2) Winkey knob controls both, and
3) computer controls computer and knob controls paddle. I decided I liked Mode
3 the best.
Thanks to everyone for the Qs. Appreciated VY1JA and VY1WR getting on. Also
3 NDs (two of which were in the last hour) and only one RI. This was a great
show. But sure would like 10 to come back.
