Another one of the worst contest weekends ever, with solar flux almost as low
as it can go and deep fading on 20M, even on signals that are usually solid
here. And go figure: puttering around on Sunday morning I worked a new one,
A71AN, on 20M CW (even had the tower nested down at the time).
This DX test was very much a domestic event here, with marginal 20M European
and JA openings -- just two JAs and only a tiny handful of EU countries. I
listened often but just didn't hear much activity. Nothing very far away heard
on 40M, either. Great job by Rick VA1CHP in such lack-luster conditions.
80M seems like a missed opportunity for North American competitors -- it should
be a cake-walk to get 10 or so call area multipliers but virtually nobody was
heard on that band. Saturday night conditions were noisy, and I had to wait
till quite late to get on, but to only work three stations and two call areas
(W7, W6) is a shame when so many points are up for grabs. Every year it's the
same way.
Heard N3MM calling CQ for a long time with a huge signal here on 80M, but he
didn't hear me with a KW and the array pointed straight at him. Received a QRZ?
or two, but prop was definitely one-way between our locations.
Last year, my first year running HP, I found 45 countries on 20M but this year
just 16. In fact, two years ago I had more points running 100W than this year
with the amplifier.
