Comments:
This was fun. I had several goals that detracted from my Q-rate. First, since
it had been a few years since I had used the Writelog AFSK software on RTTY, I
needed to relearn how to do that and with a new computer. I had actually
placed nationally in the CQWW RTTY test at my old CO QTH with my W0AH antenna
farm, but that was then. Second, I had a new radio that I had traded another
radio for. I needed to learn how to use the the new FT-897 (no CW filter) and
LDG AT-897. I had no manual so consulted the online manual at the Yaesu site.
Third, I wanted to do an A/B antenna test. My Hygain Hytower has been up over
a year here at the retirement SC QTH and works well. Earlier in the week I put
up a 40M dipole strung between two 65' towers about 67' apart. The dipole sags
to about 55' in the middle where it's fed with RG-8X. I was able to accomplish
all the above white making 100 contacts on 40 and a few additional contacts on
15 and 20. I started out running about 40 watts according to the FT-897 menu.
The FT-897 didn't even get warm so I gradually increased power to the maximum
100 watts and the FT-897 was barely warm. I put a Bird wattmeter in line and
measured only about with the FT-857 reading 100 watts, but the digital gain low
enough for almost no ALC reading. Since the Bird watt meter is not peak
reading, I substituted a Mirage peak reading watt meter which read between
60-65 watts, so that was what I was running at full power. I was able to work
most of the stations I copied. The dipole was usually better domestically and
the Hytower was usually better for DX, but there wasn't a lot of difference.
Saturday- in just a few hours- is the Rumble PSK Contest so I will be learning
how to use the FT-897 and Digipan on PSK. Thanks for the Qs and CU.
