Comments:
This was part of a shared effort at the W6YX station with the K6SU multi-op.
Thanks to the K6SU crew for accommodating my single-op effort and for offering
to give me my choice of band and antenna.
I set up a second FT1000MP on a table adjacent to my operating position and
hooked it up to our normal spotting antenna, an aging low Mosley Pro67 that is
several hundred feet from our other antennas. With no amp and a so-so antenna
I probably worked about 40 or 50 Q's with the second radio. It was often more
useful to use the receiver to tune the band on which I was running to look for
unworked stations or to listen to a spotted station while I was transmitting to
synchronize a quick QSY.
What I now realize was missing from this poor man's SO2R was the ability to
dual-CQ. In multi-op efforts several years ago we often used the duelling CQ
technique starting on Sunday afternoon to make the most of very slow Sunday run
rates. I understand that some of the top multi teams now spend the entire
contest dual-CQing on 2 radios while additional operators S&P on other radios.
With the shared station and low power I didn't think dual-CQing was a good
idea.
I started on 20 meters with a 111 hour. At the end of the 3rd hour I had 300
Q's, but the 100 Q/hr average quickly plummeted after that hour. Rain static
got very bad around the 0000Z hour and I was having a hard time pulling signals
out of the S9 QRN. It was really bad for about 15 minutes and then settled down
to a lower level for the next several hours.
I was very tired and not making many Q's in the 0700 hour so I decided to take
a break and went home to sleep for a few hours. I returned a bit after 1200Z
and tried to make some rate on 40 and 80 but it was slow. I was late getting
on 20 and ended up high in the band.
Since I hadn't been on 15 on Saturday I was impatient to get on 15 and started
CQing when only WP3R and a few loud Florida stations could be heard. Needless
to say, this was a bad decision as I didn't work anyone there and ended up
going back to 20 after a few minutes of fruitless CQs. When I finally got onto
15 it seemed to be open to much of the country but there were not many stations
there. I'd work 6 loud stations in 3 minutes then there'd be a 4 or 5 minute
gap in the log with no Q's.
Sunday afternoon and evening was as expected with very slow rates. I took my
final off time late in the 2300 hour. I probably should have taken it an hour
earlier but I was hoping for a final gasp from 15 that never happened.
