Comments:

My first attempt at RTTY contesting. It started out Friday night with checking
out the station antennas for next weeks ARRL DX. Then I heard all the RTTY and
told myself, let's see how well that SignaLink USB works. Well, that meant I
had to go find MMTTY (which I later found out I didn't need too because it's
already in the N1MM install). So here I am trying to figure MMTTY with and
without N1MM and how to tune in RTTY signals a good part of Friday night.

Saturday afternoon, after working in the yard most of the day, it was time to
try transmitting. I choose the AFSK route and read a bunch more about how not
to overdrive the signal. Hope I managed to do so. I spent some time playing on
a dead 15M to try and get the hang of stuff and filling in the function
macros.

After dinner, I made my first RTTY Q in 20 years and the first in a contest. DX
to boot (P40YL) and I almost messed that one up by clicking on the wrong things.
By that time 20M was dying so I was able to get some experience S&Ping. I tried
some of those "profile" thingies. Still not sure about those - whether they
helped or hindered. Dropped down to 40M and 80M through the night and maybe
came up with 35 Q's.

Sunday was another day out in the yard. I listened in on 20M about lunch time.
What a mess! I don't how anybody copies anything - it's almost like SSB (which I
don't do very well). Later in the afternoon, after the rain forced me inside, it
was better and I probably doubled my total in a couple hours. All S&P. Don't
know that this will ever be a great mode for me. Still have a lot to learn and
a lot of practice ahead.

cheers
dink
