Comments:

This was my 4th trip to V4 and 3rd time doing a SOAB/LP effort FD-style from a
rental villa. My annual goal is to achieve 100 QSOs/pound(station weight) and
with the entire station (rig/ps/antennas/laptop) taking up just under 25# I
achieved that handily. Thanks for the MANY TCG QSOs.

The setup was at a different villa from the past 3 trips. The QTH was on the
NNW part of the island, just above Oualie Beach (if you look at a Nevis map)
about 100'asl and about 1/4 mile from the beach. Antennas were sloping fan
dipoles; 20/15/10 and 80/40. I use wire extensions on the ends of the 80M
dipole which I would manually tie in to get on 160M. A PITA but simple - and it
played well enough for some Qs/Mults. Antennas were about 20' high on the upper
end and sloped down generally in the direction of the USA,
nominally parallel to the ground as it sloped off toward the beach, the far
ends at about 8' above the ground. Generally conditions for out-of-contest
operating were less favorable to EU from the previous QTH but the sunset runs
to JA on 20M were much better than previously experienced. I operated only
occasionally during our 10 day vacation; early mornings, late afternoons, and
late evenings, making about 300 Qs outside the contest - including giving out
the V4 mult in a Thursday nite SNS/NS.

The contest was pretty typical from past experience. Just like last year, I was
on 80M already in the first hour but 40 did play better than last year on the
whole. I stay on 40 about 2 hours after sunrise (~1000Z) as 20M is frustrating
with everyone beaming EU. 75W to a low dipole, even with the V4 prefix, isn't
quite enough to be heard off the side of most everyone beaming northeast- but
some seemed to hear my S&P call OK - just no answers to CQs.
15M opened late both days with great rates - about maxing out what me and my
competition-grade FT100D (yes, FT100D) could handle. Checking 10M often after
1900Z - I could hear South America going overhead, VP2E on groundwave, and a YS
late Sunday but no US/VE.

Although the rate sheet shows QSOs in each of the 48 hours, total operating
time was about 44 hours as I did take short naps Saturday and Sunday mornings.
XYL/Judy and others at the villa kept me fed and watered better than I deserved
and when the contest was over, Karl/V44NK and holder of V49A,
stopped by for dinner and drinks. I hadn't seen him on the last 2 trips as he
now lives over in St Kitts but was in Nevis, visiting friends that weekend. It
was good to catch up with him as he has been most helpful with V4 license
renewal every year and kindly lets me use that +10dB callsign.

My 4 trips to Nevis for ARRL CW over the last 5 years have been a great way to
survive the sunspot minimum and I am always amazed at how well a dipole works.
Not sure about next year as I continue to consider trying the contest from the
"other side" with "real antennas" and see how I match up with the "big boys"!

In any case, I upheld the TCG Prime Directive; Above all else, I HAD FUN!

73 es tnx for the Qs, Mark K0EJ/VY2EJ/V49A-op
