Thanks to the SP committee for putting on the Contest. Lot of fun.
Thanks, also, to all who worked me as sometimes the conditions were tough
especially on 40 meters.
The 20 m propagation was difficult to figure out. The Asiatic Russian and
other Far East stations were as strong as most of the European stations. Even
familiar European stations were not as loud as usual, although I don't believe
I've ever heard Phil, GU0SUP, as loud on 20 meters. (Could have been because
usually we work later in the day and this time it was at 1216Z.) Granted one
of my 20 - 10 ant. was not working, but still Europe should have been stronger
than the Asiatic Russians. Sometimes, momentarily, this swapped signal level
happens in a contest, but the strong Asiatic Russian signals were heard
throughout the times I was on 20 m. This was the case for all the Asiatic
Russian stations heard. Phenomenon like the above makes HF fun. The
propagation variations one has to deal with in each contest is part of the fun
of contesting.
Forty meters was not that good as a thunderstorm was in the local area. Again,
stations, easily worked on a single transmission in previous contests, took
several transmission to get the full exchange. Thanks to those kind enough to
do the many repeats. Even with the noise from the thunderstorm two VKs, VK3TDX
(2144Z) and VK5NPR (2206Z) plus UN7PBY (2249Z) were worked through the noise on
40 m. At 2332Z had to quit due to family commitments. Never got to 80 meters,
but the thunderstorm probably would have blunted any expectations of a good
quantity of contacts.
