Comments:
First off, my sincere congratulations to Alex at KC3R and Dick WC1M. They beat
me straight up. I have some stories, but no excuses. Great job guys!
Wasn't planning to operate the contest. Sat down 30 mins before and decided I
would operate the first evening so I could compare notes with WC1M after it was
over. I had no real plan and didn't even tell my wife I was going to be doing a
contest.
Slept 3 hours each night. Used my breaks in the day to walk the dog.
I had a few periods where signals from Europe got weak and I couldn't do
anything but tune around and call guys. I think my lack of mental prep had me
playing DXer a bit too much. Comparing breakdowns, it appears I spent too much
time enjoying the quiet on 15 meters rather than fighting for QSOs on 20m. Same
with trying to run on 80m instead of on 40m.
On Sat morning, I opened the score database on cqwpx.com and filtered to only
show single op all band high power scores for W1. I made it my mission to keep
working until I had passed the score of the next call on the list. Was up into
the top 25 scores by the 18 hours of operation mark, so that's when I decided
to push all the way to 36 hours. Its a fun way to keep motivated. Ended up
getting past the #1 score, but so did Alex and Dick. :(
I thought the quality of operating was superb. Very few guys who couldn't send
their number in a coherent way.
Activity and conditions were great. Nice to hear 20m open all night! Seemed
like an endless number of European Russian and Ukraine stations to work on all
bands. Fantastic opening to Japan on 20m this morning, but where were they?
I even got to use my European stack on 10 meters when I worked AO3T this
afternoon. That was a pleasant suprise!
I think the extra weekend in May helped USA activity by moving the contest off
of the holiday weekend. I was impressed how many stations I worked that had
numbers well over 1000 so activity must have been good everywhere.
