This contest is absolutely the most fun you can have in 48 hours on the radio.
Thanks to all who called us and those who heard us at the fringes of
propagation.
Mabrouk (Congratulations!) to all the multi's over 10Million points, especially
to the ops at P33W who set the standard each time they go out. We're pleased to
compete with Ali's simple station.
A71BX Station Description:
160: Cushcraft trap vertical on rooftop, sometimes with a tuner.
80: Inverted vee, apex at 25m; Sloping dipole from 26m to the NW with a tuner.
40: OB12-4 at 26m
20,15,10: the OB12-4 and OB9-5 at 18m
QSX: Small loop on roof of shack (not very effective), temporary 185m beverage
to NW (surprisingly effective!).

Ali and I are really pleased with this result, our best score ever! Condx were
good here in the Middle East, with lots of stations to work. We hope the log
checkers don't take the score down below 10Million, but we shall see. We got
the rate meter over 200 at times but couldn't put together an hour at that
pace. We'll keep learning.
Everything at Ali's was in fairly good condx after the QARS gang gave it a
workout in the SSB test. Before the CW test we agreed to improve the station
grounding to reduce RFI and to put up a beverage in a field down the street so
we could hear better on 80 and 160. We also put up an 80m inverted vee below
the OB12-4 to help work a few mults east of here, because the sloper to the NW
seems quite directive. Also, the OB9-5 had slipped on its mast so it had to be
reoriented to true azimuth. All of the above helped, though there are still
problems with interstation QRM. This will take some figuring out. We tried to
get CW Skimmer working at the last minute but for some reason Ali had trouble
making the purchase for the key. I'm a bit disappointed not to have had this
weapon working.
We had hoped to have A71EM join us. He is a FB operator on all modes.
However, the contest fell on a major holiday weekend in the Muslim world, so it
was time for a family trip. Next time we hope he can join us. Ali and I only
slept a very short while each, making the second day a bit slower than it had
to be.
The big news is that Ali is engaged to be married next year, so we shall see
what happens to his schedule for radio after that! Mabrouk!
160m Results: Ali is not what anyone would call "loud" on this band, but loud
enough to work those with good ears and patience. With the temporary beverage
we were able to hear so much better. With his local noise it is like trying to
hear soft music while running the vacuum cleaner. You can hear a note or two
and tell there is music there but only the loudest notes. Switching to the
beverage was like turning off the cleaner - voila! Signals! Not much rate, but
many more countries than in past years. Still a lot of guys we heard that we
couldn't work.
80m Results: The new inverted vee is not as strong in Europe as the sloper, but
seemed better to JA, Oceania, Africa. The multiplier total is our best ever on
this band as well. At one point we thought we might break 100! A few times we
were able to get a good run going on 80m, but we are too far from Europe to do
well consistently from Ali's QTH.
40m Results: What can you say about 40m? What a band! Heard all 40 Zones,
but just could not get through to the SU stations with their maniacal packet
pileups because they were inside the first hop for us. But 39 Zones in the log
thanks to XE2WWW, VE2IM, and others, that's just FB! Condx were good to all
areas of the world. Worked a strong W6YI on long path, but not many other
takers, so couldn't stay. Especially interesting was the number of QSOs in
North America during the last hours of the contest. I got to work a bunch of
US friends at that time. As the band opened into W5-land, I thought alot about
my good friend Ken K5KA who passed away the week before.
20m Results: Twenty is a tough band from here. Qatar is in a good place for
propagation but not close enough to Europe and too far from North America for
solid runs. We get good results as the band opens after sunrise in Europe but
it soon becomes absorbed and rates fall off. Especially when the band opens
for Europe to North America, everyone turns their beams that way and we're off
the back and unnoticed. As the band closes from sunset onwards, it is very
strange. Europeans get very weak or disappear altogether. South America gets
stronger while the North Americans remain copyable but weak. Breaking through
the Europeans in this situation is usually very difficult. This year we found
a good frequency at sunset the second day and held it for longer than usual
which really helped in that difficult hour.
15m Results: This is a terrific band from here, but condx were somewhat
spotty. The band closed before sunset, which meant very few North American
stations made it into the log. We were very lucky to work W8AV in Zone 4 in an
opening that lasted only a few minutes. But the rates into Europe are terrific.
The key to getting the higher multiplier is to work the Zone 6-9 stations.
This year they mostly CQ'd in our faces as the band closed so early. We're
learning to work them as soon as we can in CQ WW CW. On phone, the band holds
up and we can work them in the pileups after the rate to Europe stops. But not
on CW -- we have to stop and find them earlier.
10m Results: Miserable. Watching the packet indicating that Europeans and
Mediterranean stations were working each other was frustrating. Only one real
period of opening to Europe and it was very spotty - just working people with
really big antennas. We scoured the band. Mostly could not hear the Africans,
except for beacon ZS4TX. On the other hand, VK9 and VK6 were link-coupled with
us nearly all day. We could always hear them and they were S9+20-30db at
times. Still, we only lacked NA for WAC! Sunspots are coming, we just know
they are!
The stats are listed below, pardon the bandwidth and the errors. Need an
alternative now that K5KA is SK. The best propagation from here is to UA4 and
UR5, I think. Top countries worked are UA, DL, UR, W, UA9, in that order;
Zones 15, 16, 14, 5, and 20 in that order. Unfortunately, we have to try to
avoid running UA9 and JA to keep the points/hour up. That said, we do CQ in
those directions when the time is right. Thanks again to all!
