QTH: "Cattle Pens" Flint Hills southwest of Emporia, KS.
Severe thunderstorms Saturday evening forced me to quickly abandon the site
just as the 2M Es started and 6M was hot. The high spot is a magnet for
lighting. Copied K7BG DN47 on 2M on my whip after taking the yagi down, but no
go. Thunderstorms continued on through Sunday afternoon. Finally back in the
fray at 2230 UTC June 13. Despite missing much of the good propagation, I felt
the station did well. Highlights were 6M QSOs with VP9GE FM72 Saturday
afternoon on 2x Es and XE3N EL60 Sunday evening. Also working K1ZZ and W5ZN of
the ARRL. And everyone who said "thanks for EM18 - a new grid." Perhaps could
have made several hundred more Qs on 6M if the weather had been better... one
of the challenges with the single/op portable category.
