Number of dupes: 180
This was of course our claimed score, final score after putting log in order
and log-checking was enough for 4th place.
Station setup:
RADIOS:
2 x FT1000MP MArk V Field (key click mods, Inrad roofing filters)
SWITCHING, FILTERING ... all home made by Boris S58A
- 2 x band decoder
- complete band and radio A/B switching (12 boxes)
- 2 x set of bandpass filters in series (5 bands) - up to 130/140 db isolation
between ant ports
- interlock logic & automatic / manual switching
- triplexer
Everything worked great, no interference between the bands, no failures.
- 2 x laptops with Writelog software - our biggest problem and a bit on night
mare, at least 20 networks crashes, blocks (5 - 15 QSO) of repeated & virtual
dupes QSOs, big mess in the log ...(problems found after contest)
- 2 x USB keying / CAT - (1 x RigExert Tinny, 1 x home made - both in
combination with WL frequently produced very poor CW keying)
- each op could key only own radio and listen to own radio
- one paddle for S50A as I prefer to send CW from keyboard
- Audio Recorder: RECALL PRO on one of the laptops
- 2 x footswitch
- no tuner
Lockout system with external relays in PTT chains was working on "first one
wins" basis.
Setup was tested few days before WRTC, no on the air test in the contest before
(not good), no special strategy except maximize RUN rate and moving mults
(actually we've moved only a few of them, rates were sometimes high and it can
mislead the op). Our goal was to maximize score without paying a lot of
attention of CW / SSB mode balance. After contest we had 33,5% of SSB qsos.
With few more we would probably have highest CW QSO number. Both operators
worked all bands, both modes, QSY-ing, CQ or S/P was decision of each op.
I have no real statistics of balance between RUN and S&P QSOs.

Best 20 minutes: 106 QSOs, 318 per hour
Best 30 minutes: 146 QSOs, 292 per hour

Best 120 minutes: 453 QSOs, 227 per hour
Best 10 min rates was from 0918 to 0928 (CW 20m and CW 15m - alternate CQ on
both radios)

At least part of those 97 S5 QSOs was most probably connected to really
unnecessary and contra-productive cluster spot by S5 contester with the note
"S5 Team". S53MM realized that soon after sending spot but it was too late. I
am quite positive that many of those QSOs were removed by judging committee...
Sorry, but we had no influence and believe me it didn't make me happy when I
realized that after the contest.
And as I already wrote on the WRTC reflector:
On behalf of the S5 team I want to thank our Russian friends for a really
fantastic contest organization, providing true level playing field for all
competitors. Volunteers work was really outstanding and it is difficult to
describe everything with a few words. They are really true radioamateurs, they
were not obstructed by hot sun or storm, they've cared for us as members of
their families.
As Harry has already written, I really hope that the WRTC-2010 will be a new
and fresh engine and grounded reason for the grow of the new contesters in
Russia.
As I've noticed during my stay in Russia, Russian amateurs need not to be fear
for the future; I met a whole bunch of very young ham fans, who are already
very good even on CW code - like some old and experienced cats :-)
We all returned home with a lot of new experiences, we met old friends from the
band, met some new as well ...
Sincere congratulations to the RU1A team (RW1AC/RA1AIP) winners, great
Estonians (ES5TV/ES2RR) and N6MJ/KL9A on the 3rd place, all of you earned that
and your listing is not a surprise at all. BRAVO!
