Comments:

Holy cow that was amazing. We set a goal at the start of the contest to modestly
beat last years score by 25%. With flux up a bit here, a couple new antennas
there, and some top ops coming to visit, this seemed like a reasonable goal.
When we passed last year's score sometime during hour 22 it was obvious that we
were going to do a bit better than that! As it turns out we are posting a score
higher than our record W7 M/2 score from 2002 and it ended up being 247% of our
2009 score. Who would have thought...

Some amazing new NK7U CQ WW SSB records were set this weekend by the team.
Among them:
* A new M/2 score record for us with 6,801,250. Hopefully this will also be a
new W7 record as well. And actually our top score ever for any CQ WW SSB,
including some that were M/M, driven by a new all time QSO record. Back in 1992
as M/M we made 3,750 QSOs. This year we made 4,338.
* Crushed our best ever 40M performance. Giving credit to Joe's new 4/4 on 40M,
the band realignment, good conditions, and operator perseverance we more than
doubled our QSO record from 435 to 910, including 420 with JA, along a record
mult total.
* Approached 1,900 QSOs on 20M versus our previous record of 1,456. And our
most amazing accomplishment for the weekend is we held 14314 as a run frequency
for 12 hours on Saturday â?? an effort that all operators contributed to. We,
well N6MJ actually, also accomplished 6 hours over 100 QSO's an hour into
Europe during the weekend. We had over 1,110 20M QSOs with Europe. Pretty good
for a station on the left coast.
* And overall, we had more QSO's with Europe than we did with Asia which may be
the first time this has happened.

If there was one shortcoming for the weekend was the absence of many of the
common mults we are used to working. For instance we totally missed any QSOs
with 6Y, 9H, IS0, FK, 5W, V7, GU, GJ, J6, J7, J8, C6, FS, FG, PJ5, VP2V, VP2E,
YS, ZD8 and a few others which are usually common or at least present in our
logs. This held us back from easily breaking the current Zone 3 M/2 record.

We will come back to the band stories in a bit.

Joe has continued building his station out since last year. His current setup
is:

* 10M -- 7/7 both rotating as well as a 3 stack of C31's fixed on Japan
* 15M â?? Rotating 6 and a 6 fixed east, 5/5/5 Europe stack, as well as a 3
stack of C31's fixed on Japan.
* 20M -- 5/5 both rotating, 5/5/5 fixed on Europe, as well as 3 stack of C31's
fixed on Japan.
* 40M â?? 4/4 rotating stack as well as a rotating 3 element beam
* 80M -- 4 square and a rotating dipole.
* 160M -- a 4 square array of 1/2 wave sloping dipoles.

Joe also has a receive 4 square that can be used on 40-160.

During the summer we also upgraded all the station PC's and converted over to
Microham MicroKeyer's. On this topic a special mention needs to go out to a
variety of people who helped make sure we were able to get on the air. In early
September for the first time in over 20 years of contesting with multiple tower
setups, NK7U took a direct lightning strike. We immediately tracked down all
the damaged gear to get it repaired in time for CQWW. Big thanks go out to the
teams at Array Solutions, Hi-Z Antennas, and KD9SV for quick turnaround and
immaculate service as well as a special helping hand from W2VJN. In total, 9
control units of various types were repaired and returned typically within a
day or two. Thanks guys!

Even with this we had a few last minute repairs. A wind storm a couple days
before the contest turned one of the 10M antennas on its mast and broke the
supports on one of the 160M dipoles. Fixing the 10M beam required a quick climb
up the tower just before the contest began. As NK7U is often quoted saying
â??Its not a CQWW if I am not climbing the tower just before the contest
starts!â??

This year our operating team was made up of regulars W7ZRC, K7ZO, NK7U, N7WR,
and W7CT. We were also pleased to have the team of KL9A and N6MJ drop by for
the weekend. Their skill, enthusiasm, and energy were a key factor in powering
our performance this weekend.

A few more contest highlights:
* We actually managed 10M QSO's with Zone 4 and 5 this year as well as somehow
managed one QSO with JA. The JA QSO was a total surprise. We passed a Zone 1
station to 10M for a mult, called for him on the pass frequency and JA7YRR came
back to the amazement of N6MJ. This was our first JA 10M QSO since 2004!
* Our very last QSO of the contest was with VP8NO on 20M. We tried passing him
to 15M with 20 seconds left in the contest only to have VP8NO chuckle back and
say there was no time left -- but nice try!
* S79K was fun to have on the bands. We worked him on 40M early Saturday
evening our time with the giant pileup. KL9A called him hardly expecting to
have him hear us. It took S79K calling him back a couple times for Chris to
finally realize he needed to reply with â??QSL 59 03 Thank Youâ??.
* Made a bunch of 160M QSO's well across the Atlantic.
* Continued to watch the packet flames about where band edges really are. They
didn't seem as personal, emphatic and numerous as last year so progress is
being made. But, it really isn't that hard...

For us west coasters we pay particular attention to our JA QSO counts and we
had cause to worry in the

trends seen in 2004 thru 2008. It looks now as if this was mostly driven by
propagation and the up trend been last year continued into this year. Let's
hope the trend continues.
