Comments:
This year's SS was still open all the way to the beginning of the SS week. It
was a tempting idea to sit the whole thing out and focus on other things, such
as catching up some sleep. But as the thing started to approach, temptation to
operate got stronger and thanks to Dean N6DE he was patient with me and didn't
talk anyone else to share the station with him yet. So, it was a done deal and
phone part seems so, too.
My personal goal this year is to beat my last year's score and it fell short
few QSOs on CW part. Not bad... now I just have to improve much more on SSB
than I had planned so I can get the total over 2500 (fell 20 QSOs short last
year). I have much more to improve on SSB so I hope I'll get through that
magical 2.5k limit this year (and then quit this thing? I don't think I can
ever get 3k).
Bands were in great shape... even 10m was open briefly. Reverse beacon network
was giving nice reports but people haven't read the memo to go to 10m so pool
of stations there was very thin.
15m was working great and when we're sharing the station it's critical to have
two bands working at all times.
Station worked great. Some antennas had SWR issues and amp kept faulting
(either SWR or heat?) but I don't think that impacted too much. I paid a lot of
attention to it so I don't think I was LP/QRP for too long at any time.
Sweep was very easy this year. My last one was SDG 8h37min from the start
(0537Z). Among the other last ones were SB, SJV, NV, PR, EB, LAX, ORG... It's
funny how these locals hang to the end when you're on high band pointing to the
east whole time. You just don't get them until you come to the lower bands and
start hearing some other Californians (or them hearing you).
The new thing this year was using reverse beacon network through packet/telnet
interface. It was a great help but have still room to improvements but I am
sure it will be a major game changer in any CW contests once these are ironed
out:
1) busted calls, I was spotted as W6RKS, W6RTT, W6RB, W6RKT...so when new calls
show on bandmap always look around and you might see the real call nearby.
2) it spots when you S&P and answer someone. I got spotted a lot of the times
when I answered someone and had QSO.
3) too much stuff -- can dupes somehow be eliminated? Hard to follow what's
going on when things scroll so fast.
4) keeps computer too busy. Not sure if my WriteLog was too busy processing
incoming spots but I had a lot of hard time clicking stations on bandmap as it
kept refreshing same time.
Thanks Brad K6IDX for letting to use his excellent station again and thanks to
Dean N6DE for organizing everything.
73!
