Two hours on-air fun; mostly checking propagation before CQWW.
Rig : GenesisRadio G59 @ 5W output into vertical GP.
There is a big difference between good and excellent operator!
A good one is fast and efficient, but only master contestman knows how to work
QRP DX.
Most big gun ops are afraid to work QRP signals for two reasons: a/ if they
spend too much time
on receive, someone may take over their frequency and b/they are worried about
rate drop.
Luckily both â??fearsâ?? are completely groundless! There is a simple technique
which
Will allow you snatch that juicy QRP multiplier without wasting any time at
all!
It is called : â??THE HINTâ??. As soon as you sense a weak signal buried down
in noise and QRM mud, try to
at least copy a part of his call. Ideally his suffix, but even a single letter
will be sufficient.
Send what you have (again, even if it is a single letter) followed by ? .
This is the magic hint to QRPer that you are interested in him. He will keep
you calling
because now he knows that you are a good op, capable of pulling him out.
After the hint, donâ??t spend any more time trying to complete QSO straight
away,
Just keep working the loud ones. But do pay attention for QRPer between
contacts. You would be surprised how persistent low power guys could be once
they
know you are serious! They are not in a hurry and they can hear you well! In a
few minutes you will patch QRPers calls from bits and pieces and once you are
ready, send the exchange.
It is as simple as that! Remember, a weak QRPer could pop up from the noise
unexpectedly, QSB work both ways! Even if there is no luck initially, he may
come back and call you in 15 minutes or an hour,
at the peak of opening.
Here is my tip #2: it is called â??GOOGLE MEâ??. While sending just â???â??
to your loud caller who is calling you for the fifth time is equivalent of
saying â??sorry I am a clueless wannabe contesterâ??,
sending a bare â???â?? to QRPer has literarily opposite meaning! Hey, I am
not naïve â?" I do know how miserably my 5W sounds at your end! So if you
keep senign me just a question mark, I will keep sending my call as long as you
want me! My rate is already 2 Qso per hour at the best, so I donâ??t care how
long it takes to get me in your log â?" as long I know you are working hard!
And if you are in a hurry (as you should be) then make sure to google me the
right way:
â???â?? means â??I know you are there, but Iâ??ve got nothing yetâ??.
â??VK2?â?? means â?? I think you are VK2? but I am not sureâ??
â??VK2â?? (without ?) means: â??give me your suffix onlyâ??
And I will respond with DX DX DX DX DX DX .
And so on. Ask for the bits you need, donâ??t make me repeat stuff we both
know.
This really works only when both QRPer and big gun know what they are doing. If
done properly, QSO completion or success rate is always 100%! It works like
magic!
