What a wonderful contest ! I'm still pinching myself - 14M points from New
Mexico ? Naw...can't happen. New USA record, but congrats to the KM3T team (and
maybe others ?) for their even bigger score. At least it will set a new
benchmark for W5.
I was planning on my usual SOAB effort, but with my XYL out of town, I knew I
would be somewhat hampered taking care of pets and llamas at inconvenient
times. A chance exchange of e-mails with Bob, K5WA, on Wednesday, and
voila....a multi-single arose ! Many thanks to Bob for flying from Houston,
then driving 3 hours to my QTH. Bob is a great operator, and we had a great
time !
Almost no equipment issues. Had a Winkey fail a few hours before the contest.
Replaced it with a serial CW interface (which sometimes put out stuttering CW).
A few hours into the contest, had a brainstorm on what was wrong with the
Winkey, and put it back in. The other issue was the 40 meter beam going
intermittent on receive - but that didn't start until Sunday sunrise, when it
was time to QSY anyway.
This was my first experience with a reverse beacon network telnet cluster from
my home QTH. Using the unique>2 option, available on AR-Cluster, version 6,
virtually eliminated busted calls. Fantastic ! A side benefit of the RBN is to
use the bandmap to find potential holes for starting a run. Good stuff for the
assisted single-op, or multi-op.
