Station: K1LT

Class: Single Op LP
QTH: Ohio EM89ps
Operating Time (hrs): 4.3

Summary:

Club: Mad River Radio Club

Comments:

I elected to operate low power to avoid being an alligator which also
allows me to leave the amplifier tuned for 20 meters for the All Asian
contest. I took several "breaks" to tune for Asians, but I didn't
find many new stations to work.

I made about the same number of contacts as last year (81 versus 86),
although it. took longer. From this location, conditions seemed much
noisier than last year, but maybe the noise pain memory subsides with
time. On the other hand, the radio propagation seemed better than
last year, so maybe the noise propagated better.

I meant to get on for the sunrise as often the noise levels decrease
over night. However, I overslept by about an hour and awoke to a
thunderstorm in progress, so maybe I didn't miss too much. I also
wanted to catch Asians on 40 meters, but apparently a geomagnetic
storm erupted and the 40 meter signals were very weak and fluttery and
the 20 meter signals were completely gone.

My only DX was DL6FBL, who was very strong and easy to copy, and KV4FZ
who was also readily copyable later in the evening (not so much
early).

Does anyone think that a July or August date for this contest might
find conditions still acceptable in the Southern Hemisphere, but less
noisy in the Northern Hemisphere?

One minor finding: the Beverages seem to hear better when the noise is
nearby while the phased array hears better when the noise is farther
away. For the first few hours, the Beverages played better, and then
the phased array heard the west coast nicely.

I observe that my raw score (QSO points) is exactly the same as last
year except that I can multiply by 1.5 this time.

Equipment: K3, 65 foot "T" and 80 radials, 12 beverages, 8 element
SDR-based phased array.
