Comments:
The big CME event was worrisome as it can wipe out Alaska big time but all it
did was put us 20 feet underwater. The bands were very good, mostly, and we
could usually find a very good run band during the 48 hours with nine 200+
hours
allowing us to reach our goal of more then 6000 Q's and 9 million. Okay, 6002
isn't a real goal smashing success story but more then 6000 never the less.
Trey, N5KO, who is known for his error free logging skills did most of the
heavy lifting on 20 to Europe where the aurora buzz was awful and all the
signals were bathtub quality audio. He remarked it was the first time he heard
the letter "H" sound like a "T". His rate took a dump on 20 meters to prevent
penalties but made up for it with many 200+ hours on the bands where we were
loud and signals sounded like real on/off keying CW. Station notebook records
this comment: "Guest op from California on 20 meters working Europe reports
the pileup is most unpleasant." He did eventually unwind the huge snarl and
all was well again.
Steve, K6AW was the other RUN op and logged 200+ hours, mostly on 15 meters
and doing double duty did most of the mult hunting on that band as well. There
is a reason HC8N won contests and these two guys are clear examples where
excellent CW ops can trump other stations with geographic advantages. Wigi,
AL7IF and I were the mult guys and late night low band ops. Wigi also prepared
the most excellent contest dinner with Steve's selection of fine dinning
contest wines. Once again Lucy the dog did absolutely nothing to help.
We will be in all four 160 contests coming up, ARRL, Stew and CQ both modes
but not doing what I would consider that well on top band this year so far.
