This was the 12th year in a row that I've operated in the ARRL
10 Meter Contest from the station of my friend, George K5TR.
Propagation was not nearly as good as I was hoping it would be
for this point in the solar cycle.

Propagation was especially poor on Saturday, when
the band was essentially not open at all to Europe or northeastern
Asia. The best I could do for DX on Saturday was a single Frecnh
station, a single Portuguese station, and two stations in
northwesern Africa. I had not worked any Japanese stations or
other east Asians on Friday night, and to top it off, there was
almost no propagation to the US all day on Saturday. There was one
bright spot, though - having my antennas pointing south all day
did help pick up many more Mexican stations and multpliers than I
got last year.

Sunday was slightly better, with weak openings to Europe, a short
opening to Japan, and finally decent propagation to most of the
United States and Canada. Surprisingly, I worked the Northwest
Territories twice (I found one station on a search and pounce run
and the other called in later) but I never managed to work Oregon.
In total, I missed four states, three provinces, 2 Canadian
territories, and Labrador, which is not its own province or territory
and yet counts as a multiplier anyway.

I experienced something that never fails to thrill me just a
little. On both mornings, I managed to work other amateur radio
stations in southeast Asia by pointing my antennas to my southeast
(about 135 degrees azimuth). The short path to that part of the
world from central Texas is to the northwest (about 315 degrees
azimuth). In our morning, though, most of the planet between
Texas and southeast Asia on the short path is in darkness. The
long path, on the other hand, was mostly in sunlight at that time
and for a brief moment, conditions are just right. I made contact
with other radio stations over a distance more than halfway
around the planet. No wires, no networks - just two radios with
some aluminum stuck high up in the sky, enjoying one of the fleeting
wonders of nature.
